AM I NEXT? NO LOVE AT SCOTT'S MIRACLE-GRO

Marysville, Ohio-based Scotts Miracle-Gro Company, a major producer of consumer lawn, garden, and pest control products, has announced that it is responding to shifting consumer buying patterns in economically hard times, reduced retailer orders, and major inventory overstock issues at major clients like Walmart, Target, and Home Depot.

According to the company's CEO and Chairman James Hagedorn, "While we have been forced to make dozens of tough decisions in a compressed time frame, including a headcount reduction of hundreds of people, we’re also protecting our competitive advantages and securing our leadership pipeline we need in the future."

Hundreds of employees remain at risk in this second round of layoffs since 200 employees were laid off in February 2022 at its Hawthorne Gardening subsidiary, one of the country's largest suppliers to indoor cannabis grow operations.

Change is coming. There will always be a tomorrow, no matter how much you may try to ignore it. There are no guarantees in life or promises for a bright future. We see good people being laid off through no fault of their own. Just because something bad hasn't happened yet, doesn't mean it won't. It can happen to anyone, anytime, anywhere. No one is guaranteed to wake up tomorrow and still have a job by evening. Are you now wondering, Am I Next?

AM I NEXT? NO LOVE AT SEVILLE FARMS

Fort Worth, Texas-based Seville Farms, a grower of high-quality annuals, perennials, ground covers, and a supplier of greenhouse management software, has announced a mass layoff and/or plant closing of three of its locations as it attempts to sell the company.

The layoffs has impacted 227 employees at farm locations near Winona, Texas, Los Fresnos, Texas, and Mansfield, Texas.

According to the company's President and CEO, Billy Brentlinger, "Three facilities are still in operation. Seville Farms is working to sell the company and save as many jobs as possible. Workers are still at those sites, but he said he couldn't say how many. We are still open; we're shipping. The sites still have inventory that is being sold as Seville is operating as an ongoing business."

The decision was driven by the loss of a key customer and market factors. While the customer was not identified, "the wholesale greenhouse and nursery business produces floral products for several large retailers such as Walmart and Home Depot."

AM I NEXT? NO LOVE AT HAWTHORNE GARDENING COMPANY

Vancouver, Washington-based Hawthorne Gardening Company, a subsidiary of Scotts Miracle-Gro and supplier of horticulture, organics, hydroponics, and lighting equipment and supplies, has announced that the company is transferring its manufacturing and assembly of its indoor cannabis grow operations and organic lighting products from Vancouver, Washington to a facility located in Temecula, California

The move has already impacted 150 employees, with approximately 100 employees remaining in Vancouver.

According to a company spokesperson, "It's a strategic move, consolidating all of the company's lighting manufacturing and assembly into one space — located closer to seaports and in the nation's largest cannabis market, the state of California. Unfortunately, a number of our people were impacted. That's something we can't really diminish at all. Decisions like this are never easy."
