AM I NEXT? NO LOVE AT ACCO BRANDS USA

Lake Zurich, Illinois-based ACCO Brands USA, designers, manufacturers, and marketers of office supplies and other business and consumer products, has announced the closure of its Sidney, New York manufacturing facility. The facility produces desk calendars, notebooks, and planners.

The closure, already under war, will impact 231 employees in phases. The last caretaker/closure employees will be laid off on February 10, 2025. ACCO plans to relocate the manufacturing activities to an external supplier and transition the distribution function to its Booneville, Mississippi, facility.

According to a company spokesperson, "ACCO Brands is continually challenged to determine the best way to conduct business, optimize capacity, increase capability, and respond to market pressures. Accordingly, we spend a significant amount of time evaluating our business and operations footprint to ensure we have the right structure to respond to changing market conditions and remain competitive. During a recent evaluation, we made the difficult decision to close our Sidney, N.Y. manufacturing and distribution plant. This decision was not made lightly, as many dedicated employees work there."

Change is coming. There will always be a tomorrow, no matter how much you may try to ignore it. There are no guarantees in life or promises for a bright future. We see good people being laid off through no fault of their own. Just because something terrible hasn't happened yet doesn't mean it won't. It can happen to anyone, anytime, anywhere. No one is guaranteed to wake up tomorrow and still have a job by evening. While many employees can read the writing on the wall, why do most assume it’s targeted at someone else? Are you now wondering, Am I Next?

AM I NEXT? NO LOVE AT ND PAPER

Am I Next? Reconfiguration and layoffs at ND Paper.

Nine Dragons Paper Limited, the Dongguan City, China-based parent of Dayton, Ohio-based ND Paper, a manufacturer of paper pulp and pulped products such as paper and containerboard, has announced layoffs at its Rumford, Maine mill.

An estimated 122 employees have been targeted for layoff and the decision is said to be driven by a business realignment involving adjusting the products produced as well as ceasing certain operations involving mechanical pulping and coating and supercalender operations. The intent is to re-balance the product line to compensate for the decline caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

According to a company spokesperson, “Moving our largest Rumford machine into packaging grades helps to balance the deteriorating printing and writing market in North America, while simultaneously positioning us into bigger and more stable packaging paper markets. The decision is a very difficult one as it will impact the numbers of our dedicated workforce. In order to position the Rumford mill and company to remain viable and sustainable for the long term, work redesigns and reconfigurations across the business are necessary.”
