Bedford, New Hampshire-based Segway, the iconic creator of two-wheeled personal transporters and now-owned by Beijing, China-based Ninebot, has announced that the production of the original Segway transporter will be discontinued on July 15, 2020.
Media coverage at the time sugested that the Segway would be so ubiquitous as to demand that cities redesign transit paths to accomodate Segways. Unfortunately, cost and high-profile accidents curtailed their adoption on a wide-scale. Most units were used by law enforcement, postal employees, and some warehouse workers.
Along with the Segway PT (Personal Transporter), the Segway SE-3 Patroller and the Segway Robotics Mobility Platform, will also be discontinued. The company will continue to manufacture scooters, especially for scooter-sharing companies like Lime and Bird.
Change is coming. There will always be a tomorrow, no matter how much you may try to ignore it. There are no guarantees in life or promises for a bright future. Just because something bad hasn't happened yet, doesn't mean it won't. It can happen to anyone, anytime, anywhere. No one is guaranteed to wake up tomorrow and still have a job by evening. Are you now wondering, Am I Next?
