Akron, Ohio-based PlusOne Communications, an information technology company providing call center and customer service outsourcing, has announced the closure of the company on May 1, 2021. All 155 workers will lose their jobs.

The decision appears to be driven by the loss of the company's largest customer, said to be a television and internet services provider.

As per a company filing with the State of Ohio, "PlusOne intends to cease operations and close its facility as a result of being notified by its client of its intent to terminate their services agreement with PlusOne. As a consequence of permanently closing the entire Facility, and based on the best available information, the employment of all employees at the Facility will be terminated on May 1, 2021. All positions and jobs at the Facility (approximately 155) will be eliminated as of May 1, 2021, with the exception that less than six (6) employees will be retained beyond May 1, 2021 for approximately 3 weeks to perform wind-up duties."

Am I Next? Direct Auto and Life Insurance closing call center.

National General Management Corporation, parent of Nashville, Tennessee-based Direct Auto and Life Insurance, an underwriter of non-standard insurance policies, will be closing their Baton Rouge, Louisiana call center and laying off approximately 127 workers. An additional 63 workers will be offered the opportunity to telecommute and provide services from their homes.

Call centers are particularly susceptible to automation using IVR (Interactive Voice Response), competition from the company’s self-help websites that can solve many of the routine problems normally handed by call center employees, and of course, outsourcing to a BPO (Business Process Outsourcer) which can allow a company to develop its core competencies while providing flexible staffing options, insulating the company from dealing with employees, and providing specialized services at a lower price point.
