Am I Next? Layoffs at Communications Test Design, Inc.

Chester, Pennsylvania-based Communications Test Design, Inc., a provider of electronic device design, manufacturing, repair, and delivery services to device manufacturers and distributors, has announced that it will lay off 119 employees from is Lincoln, California facility co-located with the Verifone warehouse.

70 employees were laid off immediately and another 49 employees were scheduled to be laid off on November 9, 2020. This layoff follows the company's layoff of 128 people from its Lincoln location last year in October 2019 concurrently with a Verifone layoff.

It is believed that cutbacks were the result of reduced demand from Verifone which was acquired by San Francisco, California-based Francisco Partners in 2018.

Austin, Texas-based National Instruments, a producer of automated test equipment and virtual instrumentation software, has announced a 9% reduction in force to meet the business challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. Approximately 650 employees are impacted by the decision, including approximately 200 employees located in Austin, Texas.

NI CEO, Eric Starkloff, noted, "We have and will continue to take a broad range of actions to ignite growth. Building on our unique software position, we believe we have the opportunity to once again modernize and disrupt our industry. We remain focused on execution in the areas of our business that can drive our growth even within the constraints of an overall weaker spending environment. The actions we are taking, on both reductions and investments, are focused on achieving long-term growth.”

“Our customers have felt the economic impact created by the COVID-19 pandemic, and so have we. We now know that the global recovery will be longer and more gradual than just about anyone initially predicted.”

Am I Next? Downturn equals layoffs at Daktronics.

Brookings, South Dakota-based Daktronics, a maker of large video and LED display and messaging displays, has announced that it will be reducing its headcount in anticipation of a continuing market downturn associated with the COVID-19 pandemic. Approximately 100 employees will be impacted by the layoffs.

According to a company spokesperson, "We now foresee a more prolonged downturn and we felt a longer-term solution was necessary."

"During the first quarter of fiscal 2021, our customers reduced their spending on audio-visual systems as they worked through the economic and business implications of COVID-19. We took corresponding action to reduce our operating expenses to align with expected order and sales declines. We regret the impact this has on them and their families."
