AM I NEXT? NO LOVE AT FRESHLY

New York, New York-based Freshly, a prepared meal delivery service, has announced the closure of its 171,000-square-foot Savage, Maryland distribution center.

The closure will impact 454 employees and is expected to occur between March 9, 2023, through March 31, 2023.

The decision was driven by a strategic shift in business strategy from its subscription model of delivering freshly prepared meals directly to customers and instead focusing on expanding into retail following a change in control.

According to a company spokesperson, "While Freshly’s direct-to-consumer business will be regrettably impacted as a result of this shift, we hope to continue serving our customers the same fresh ready meal solutions, just in the retail channel. As part of this pivot, we determined it was necessary to reduce the size of Freshly’s workforce. These decisions are always difficult, and we are committed to treating impacted employees with respect and supporting them through the transition.”

Change is coming. There will always be a tomorrow, no matter how much you may try to ignore it. There are no guarantees in life or promises for a bright future. We see good people being laid off through no fault of their own. Just because something bad hasn't happened yet, doesn't mean it won't. It can happen to anyone, anytime, anywhere. No one is guaranteed to wake up tomorrow and still have a job by evening. Are you now wondering, Am I Next?

AM I NEXT? NO LOVE AT PREFERRED MEALS SYSTEMS

Berkeley, Illinois-based Preferred Meals Systems, a provider of complete packaged meals for schools, early childhood/head start, summer programs, seniors, airlines, homeless, and various other business opportunities, has announced the company plans to halt operations and close down its food packaging facility in Moosic, Pennsylvania.

The closure will impact 285 employees, including 120 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The total number of employees does not account for up to 200 temporary workers -- raising the number to over 400 layoffs. Layoffs are scheduled for July 17, 2022.

A company spokesperson noted, "Preferred Meals' parent company, Elior North America, has made the difficult business decision to exit its prepared meals production and distribution business. As a result, production in the Preferred Meals manufacturing facility in Moosic, Pa. will close by the end of the summer."

AM I NEXT? NO LOVE AT TUR-PAK FOODS

Sioux City, Iowa-based Tur-Pak Foods, a turkey processing plant and private label co-packer, has announced the closure of its processing facility in Sioux City, Iowa.

The closure will impact 121 employees and is scheduled for May 9, 2022.

It is unknown if the closure is market-driven or related to a "human trafficking" federal lawsuit filed in 2020 and 2021 alleging that J-1 foreign exchange students from Brazil and Chile were exploited as cheap labor at Tur-Pak in exchange for their education at Western Iowa Tech Community College.
