AM I NEXT? NO LOVE -- LAYOFFS AT QORVO

Am I Next? Qorvo shutters manufacturing facility.

Greensboro, North Carolina-based Qorvo, semiconductor company that specializes in radio frequency communications circuitry, has announced a restructuring which will eliminate the company’s manufacturing operations at it Apopka, Florida facility and involve the elimination of 142 employees associated with the manufacturing functions. The facility manufactured surface acoustic wave filters which aided cell phones to produce clearer signals by eliminating unwanted frequencies. The Apopka facility will remain open as an engineering design center. Manufacturing will be transferred to the company’s other facilities.

There is little doubt that the company has been impacted by the U.S. Government’s decision to restrict sales of technology products to China’s largest telecommunications company Huawei which stands accused of modifying circuitry to allow back-door access to telecommunications gear. According to a company announcement, “Huawei and its affiliates have purchased multiple products from Qorvo’s Mobile Products and Infrastructure and Defense Products operating segments, and sales to Huawei and its affiliates accounted for approximately $469 million or 15% of Qorvo’s total revenue in its fiscal year ended March 30, 2019.”

AM I NEXT? NO LOVE -- LAYOFFS AT IBM (09/19/24)

Am I Next? IBM restructuring layoffs.

SEPTEMBER 19, 2024 — WHY YOU NEVER HEAR ABOUT LAYOFFS

IBM continues stealth layoff practices, including the use of non-disclosure agreements, to avoid media attention. Sometimes, it executes mass layoffs in a number of offices just under the reporting minimums.

While no numbers seem to have surfaced, it appears that between three and five thousand employees may have been targeted under IBM’s workforce rebalancing initiative.

APRIL 24, 2023 — RED HAT LAYOFFS

Raleigh, North Carolina-based Red Hat Software, acquired by IBM in 2019, announced a 4% reduction in force, impacting 750 employees IN general and administrative positions.

JANUARY 25, 2023 — 3.900 LAYOFFS FROM DIVESTITURES

The company has announced that it will eliminate about 1.5% of its global workforce or 3,000 employees as part of its divestments from Kyndryl Holdings, the IT services business that IBM spun off last year, and its healthcare analytics business,

IBM continues to play catch-up as it pivots from its traditional infrastructure and information technology services to the fast-growing cloud-computing market.

MAY 21, 2020 — 1,000+ LAYOFFS ACROSS FIVE STATES

Once again, IBM refused to provide specifics regarding the layoffs — which, according to some media reports, number in the thousands and affect employees in at least five states.

According to a company spokesperson, “IBM’s work is in a highly competitive marketplace and requires flexibility to constantly add high-value skills to our workforce. While we always consider the current environment, IBM’s workforce decisions are in the interest of the long-term health of our business. Recognizing the unique and difficult situation this business decision may create for some of our employees, IBM is offering subsidized medical coverage to all affected U.S. employees through June 2021.”

It is believed that California, Missouri, Pennsylvania, and New York may be among the hardest-hit states. The company was suffering from declining revenues prior to the Chinese Virus pandemic and used an earnings call to signal “aggressive structural actions” to improve the competitiveness (i.e cut costs) of its Global Technology Services consulting unit, which represents about a third of IBM’s revenue.

Armonk, New York-based IBM, the iconic computer manufacturer, has announced the consequences of a normal business realignment, including a major reduction in force estimated to be approximately 1,700 employees

A company spokesperson commented, “We are continuing to reposition our team to align with our focus on the high-value segments of the IT market and we also continue to hire aggressively in critical new areas that deliver value for our clients and IBM.

Considering that IBM stands accused of age discrimination, you can be that the company’s actions will be scrutinized for anything that will earn loophole-lawyers a payday.

There is little doubt that additional layoffs will occur after IBM closes on its $34 billion Red Hat acquisition later in the year and starts the process of integration that will eliminate redundant functions and positions among Red Hat’s 13,000 employees.
