FEBRUARY 24, 2021 — LAYOFFS AHEAD

The company has announced a restructuring and a reduction in force across the company’s North American workforce.

Although the company refused to provide a specific number of layoffs, a company spokesperson noted, “The adjustments to our structure, unfortunately, will result in North American employees leaving our Company. Since conversations are ongoing with employees, we will not be sharing any more details. Decisions that negatively impact any of our employees are always difficult to make and are only made after careful consideration.”

The company is restructuring and reshaping its brands and will concentrate on coffee, pet food, jams, jellies, and peanut butter.

The company noted that it had sold its dog and cat food brand Natural Balance for about $50 million to Los Angeles, California-based private equity firm Nexus Capital Management LP. The company also divested its Crisco shortening and oils business for $550 million to Parsippany, New Jersey-based B&G Foods Inc. in 2020.

Orrville, Ohio-based J.M.Smucker Company, the 120- year-old iconic jam-maker, announced that it will be consolidating its pet food operations in Smucker’s Orrville headquarters.

The restructuring will result in 100+ layoffs and the closure of an office in San Francisco, California, and an office in Burbank (Natural Balance Pet Foods) that was acquired from San Francisco-based Big Heart Pet Brands as part of a $5.8 billion deal.

Two Pennsylvania offices acquired from Meadville, Pennsylvania-based Ainsworth Pet Nutrition ($1.7 billion) will result in another 131 employees losing their jobs; 77 in Meadville, Pennsylvania, and 54 in Sewickley, Pennsylvania.

The company acquired Big Heart Pet Brands (Milk-Bone, Meow Mix, Kibbles ‘n Bits, etc.) and Ainsworth Pet Nutrition (Rachael Ray Nutrish). For those who know Smuckers primarily for their jams, they also have manufacturing and distribution deals covering such iconic brands as Folgers, Dunkin' Donuts, Café Bustelo coffees; Jif peanut butter; Crisco, Pillsbury, and Hungry Jack foods.

Change is coming. There will always be a tomorrow, no matter how much you may try to ignore it. There are no guarantees in life or promises for a bright future. Just because something bad hasn't happened yet, doesn't mean it won't. It can happen to anyone, anytime, anywhere. No one is guaranteed to wake up tomorrow and still have a job by evening. Are you now wondering, Am I Next?
