JULY 26, 2022 — 80 LAYOFFS IN PRE-MERGER MANEUVER
The company announces 80 layoffs in preparation for its merger with Boston, Massachusetts-based Ginkgo Bioworks Holdings, a synthetic biology rival.
According to interim Chairman Jay Flatley, “We are confident that, as part of Ginkgo, Zymergen will be a significant contributor to that future."
Danger ahead — Zymergen has not commented on further layoffs to close or downsize its Emeryville, California headquarters.

Emeryville, California-based Zymergen, a biotechnology company specializing in the development of bio-engineered materials and products including genetically engineered microbes that are used for industrial fermentation, has announced a major restructuring that will result in the discontinuance of several product lines including consumer care and electronics film programs.
The restructuring will impact 220 employees commencing with 106 layoffs on November 22, 2021.
According to a company statement, "We have made significant progress on a number of the objectives we laid out in our August update, including a review and focusing of our portfolio, strengthening our Commercial organization, our product development, and launch process, and extending our cash runway. We are pleased with our progress and remain focused on our strategy of pursuing continuous launches of breakthrough products."
