Landover, Maryland-based Giant Food of Maryland, a regional supermarket chain with 165 stores, has announced the closure of its Hanover, Maryland and Milford, Delaware warehouses.
The closure will impact 362 employees and commence on October 21, 2023.
The decision was driven by the company's home delivery operation model in which company employees will pull online orders from the store shelves and package them for a third-party service to deliver.
According to a company spokesperson, “Our ambition at Giant is to meet the changing needs of our delivery… faster delivery, more delivery time slots, and a broader assortment. We are adapting our operating structure to better meet those needs and to provide this important service through a local fulfillment model."
"We will consolidate our Giant Delivers business out of our newly opened Manassas, Virginia, e-commerce fulfillment center and launch a localized pick-from-store model using our Giant associates as well as continue to partner with third-party providers to provide faster delivery for our customers."
Change is coming. There will always be a tomorrow, no matter how much you may try to ignore it. There are no guarantees in life or promises for a bright future. We see good people being laid off through no fault of their own. Just because something bad hasn't happened yet, doesn't mean it won't. It can happen to anyone, anytime, anywhere. No one is guaranteed to wake up tomorrow and still have a job by evening. Are you now wondering, Am I Next?
