Tonawanda, New York-based Sumitomo Rubber Industries USA, a global tire and rubber company, has announced the closure of its Tonawanda Sheridan Drive tire manufacturing facility.
The closure will impact 1,500 employees.
According to a company spokesperson, “While the company did implement cost-control measures, efficiency enhancements, capital investments, and other improvements over the last several years, these changes have not offset mounting financial losses at the facility. We regret to inform you that after a very difficult decision, SRI has decided to close the SRUSA Tonawanda facility effective immediately. This decision was not made lightly, and we understand the significant impact it has on each of you, your families, and our entire community.”
Change is coming. There will always be a tomorrow, no matter how much you may try to ignore it. There are no guarantees in life or promises for a bright future. We see good people being laid off through no fault of their own. Just because something terrible hasn't happened yet doesn't mean it won't. It can happen to anyone, anytime, anywhere. No one is guaranteed to wake up tomorrow and still have a job by evening. While many employees can read the writing on the wall, why do most assume it’s targeted at someone else? Are you now wondering, Am I Next?
