AM I NEXT? NO LOVE AT PROGRESSIVE CASUALTY INSURANCE

Mayfield Village, Ohio-based Progressive Casualty Insurance, the third-largest insurance carrier and the No. 1 commercial auto insurer in the United States, has announced it is permanently eliminating its Commercial Auto Insurance Procedure (CAIP) group located in Mayfield Village.

The layoffs will impact 76 employees whose last day of employment will be December 31, 2021.

According to a company statement filed with the State of Ohio, " This job elimination is taking place as a result of the expiration of third-party contracts pursuant to which the affected employees have performed services for the past several years. The nonrenewal of this contract was announced to the CAIP group in January 2020. "

The remaining "employees who are not fully vaccinated against COVID-19 will pay a $25 surcharge per paycheck, or $650 for the year commencing January 2022. The company is justifying the surcharge by noting, "At this point in the pandemic, we know that unvaccinated individuals are 29 times more likely to be hospitalized with COVID. The average cost of these hospitalizations covered on our medical plan has been $72,000 and we’ve had several that amounted to hundreds of thousands of dollars in medical claims. In total, our medical plan has incurred over $25 million in COVID-related claims.

The decision to demand its unvaccinated employees pay a surcharge was made by Progressive, who, 'as the insurance company, decides what expenses are covered, what the deductible and coinsurance will be and how much we pay in bi-weekly premiums.'”

AM I NEXT? NO LOVE AT C & S WHOLESALE GROCERS

Keene, New Hampshire-based C&S Wholesale Grocers, a grocery supply chain wholesaler, and service provider to the independent grocery market industry, has announced a major reduction in force at its Suffield, Connecticut distribution center.

The mass layoff will affect 175 employees scheduled to occur between January 8, 2022, and January 21, 2022.

The decision was driven by the loss of a major customer, Stop & Shop stores, changing to an in-house self-distribution system. Stop & Shop stores accounted for 85% of the business at the warehouse and distribution center.

This follows 134 employee layoffs in the company's warehouse and distribution center located in Newburgh, New York. Other layoffs may occur as the company responds to Quincy, Massachusetts-based Ahold Delhaize, the company parent now engaging in an ongoing operational transformation of its East Coast supply chain into “a fully integrated, self-distribution model.”

AM I NEXT? NO LOVE AT ARAMARK (05/02/22)

Am I Next? Contract loss at Aramark, layoffs in Boston, Massachsetts.

MAY 2, 2022 — ARAMARK CAUGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF A UNION PROBLEM

The Georgetown University Hotel and Conference Center located in Washington, D.C. is scheduled to be transitioned from a hotel to an interim student housing complex while a new student housing complex is under construction.

The hotel, serviced by Aramark, is set to lay off all its hotel employees without termination or severance pay by June 30, 2022. Aramark’s other university contracts are unaffected.

An agreement between the hotel and the workers’ union has resulted in only managers and supervisors receiving severance pay, neglecting other employees who served quarantining students during the COVID lockdown.

There is little or no doubt that the unionized rank and file were screwed during the union’s (Unite23 labor union based in Washington, D.C.) negotiations.

Employees were expendable … “When asking the union for help getting a severance, employees were told that the union cannot do anything to help, citing the pandemic as a reason why compensation cannot be given. The union noted their negotiations were responsible for the decision to give some managers severance pay.”
