Chicago, Illinois-based UTLX Manufacturing, the largest builder and lessor of railroad tank cars in North America, has announced that it will be responding to significantly reduced commodity transportation, especially in the oil and gas sector, by eliminating at least 350 jobs at its railcar production facility in Sheldon, Texas.
Railcar production is scheduled to be halted in August 2020 when the company plans to convert the manufacturing facility into a railcar repair facility.
According to a company spokesperson, “Current and expected demand is simply insufficient to support two tank car manufacturing facilities going forward. Sluggish activity in several markets we serve has resulted in fewer rail shipments and falling demand for new tank cars both now and for the foreseeable future.
“In making the difficult business decision to cease tank car manufacturing at the Sheldon facility, we recognize the impact on our dedicated employees, their families, and the community. We will work with employees on outplacement services and help them apply for any available opportunities within the company, including in our growing repair business.”
Change is coming. There will always be a tomorrow, no matter how much you may try to ignore it. There are no guarantees in life or promises for a bright future. Just because something bad hasn't happened yet, doesn't mean it won't. It can happen to anyone, anytime, anywhere. No one is guaranteed to wake up tomorrow and still have a job by evening. Are you now wondering, Am I Next?
