FedEx announced that it will implement cost-cutting measures that could affect hundreds of employees. UPS announced it will become the primary air cargo provider for the United States Postal Service. FedEx will cease providing domestic air transportation services to the Postal Service when its contract expires Sept. 29. 2024
AUGUST 17, 2023 — 843 EMPLOYEES AT FIVE FACILITIES
FedEx plans layoffs at 5 facilities, impacting 843 employees.
Two layoffs involve FedEx Ship Centers in Colorado and Ohio as the company implements its network consolidation plan for Express and Ground units.
Three layoffs involve FedEx Supply Chain, the logistics subsidiary that provides third-party logistics services in Texas, Pennsylvania, and Indiana. The layoffs are related to contract losses due to customers switching to other logistics providers.
AUGUST 5, 2023 — 280 EMPLOYEES IN FORT WORTH, TEXAS
The company has announced the loss of a customer who is relocating operations and will be eliminating 280 employees at its facility in Fort Worth, Texas. The separation date is planned for September 23, 2023.
Other layoffs include more than 900 jobs will be eliminated at facilities around the country, including 58 workers in Temple, Texas; 59 in Macon, Georgia; 73 in Richland, Mississippi; 220 in York, Pennsylvania; 170 in Indianapolis, Indiana; and 50 in Memphis, Tennessee.
APRIL 27, 2023 — FEDEX TO CLOSE PILOT BASES
FedEx is pursuing an aggressive campaign to eliminate billions in structural costs by the fiscal year 2027 and will be closing its pilot bases in Alaska, California, and Germany.
According to a company statement, “As the global business environment continues to evolve, FedEx has made the decision to relocate its pilots and close its 757 crew base in Cologne, Germany (CGN) and its MD-11 crew bases in Anchorage, Alaska (ANC) and Los Angeles, California (LAX). The decision only affects the base of the crews operating these flights and will not impact our current service.
Our operations in these markets continue to play an important role in the global FedEx network and the flexibility of this network enables us to make adjustments that best meet the needs of our customers throughout the world. As with any base closure, the process is a gradual one and this relocation will occur without any disruption to our operations.”
FEBRUARY 1, 2023 —10% OF THE MANAGEMENT TEAM TARGETED FOR SEPARATIONS

As you know, we have embarked on a transformation effort to create the world’s most flexible, efficient, and intelligent supply chain for our customers. This process is critical to ensure we remain competitive in a rapidly changing environment, and it requires some difficult decisions.
Today we are in the process of informing a number of team members across our global enterprise that their positions have been eliminated as we reduce the size of our officer and director team by more than 10% and consolidate some teams and functions.
Saying goodbye to longtime colleagues and friends whom we value and respect is extraordinarily difficult. Unfortunately, this was a necessary action to become a more efficient, agile organization. It is my responsibility to look critically at the business and determine where we can be stronger by better aligning the size of our network with customer demand. While we have already taken many actions to that end, it was necessary to also look closely at the size of our leadership team and functions that could be consolidated.

DECEMBER 6, 2022 — INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA FEDEX -MANAGED FACILITY TO CLOSE
FedEx has confirmed that its West-side Indianapolis facility will be permanently closed in June 30, 2023, with shift-based phased layoffs beginning on January 31, 2023.
The closure will impact 179 employees, of which approximately 85 will be terminated during the first two phases in January and February. Phases three and four will begin at the end of March and stretch until facility closure on June 30, 2023.
The closure was “due to our customer’s decision to transition its business to a new location that will be managed by a new third-party logistics provider.”

Memphis, Tennessee-based, the iconic overnight delivery service, has announced that it will be responding to the deterioration of economic fundamentals and supply change challenges.
The company announced that it is shuttering over 90 storefronts and 5 corporate offices while putting off new hires as it responds to a decline in its global package delivery business.
According to FedEx CEO Raj Subramaniam, "Global volumes declined as macroeconomic trends significantly worsened later in the quarter, both internationally and in the U.S. We are swiftly addressing these headwinds, but given the speed at which conditions shifted, first-quarter results are below our expectations.”
"While this performance is disappointing, we are aggressively accelerating cost reduction efforts and evaluating additional measures to enhance productivity, reduce variable costs, and implement structural cost-reduction initiatives. These efforts are aligned with the strategy we outlined in June, and I remain confident in achieving our fiscal year 2025 financial targets.”
