Columbus, Ohio-based Designer Brands, a shoe retailer of designer and name brand shoes and fashion accessories through its DSW (Designer Shoe Warehouse) stores and e-commerce website, has announced that it would be laying off 92 employees from its customer service facility located in Columbus, Ohio commencing March 27, 2021. The work will be outsourced to a third-party call center.

According to a company spokesperson, "Covid-19 continues to have an immense adverse impact on the retail industry, affecting consumer demand, shopping behaviors, and other key business aspects. These changes have forced us to make difficult decisions. As such we are transitioning most of our customer service roles to a third-party contact center to maintain Designer Brands’ long-term fiscal health."

Eindhoven, Netherlands-based Signify, formerly known as Phillips Lighting, a world leader in lighting products, systems, services, and software, plans to cut 700 jobs out of its global workforce. Impacted will be approximately 135 employees at its production facility in Tupelo, Mississippi, begin in April 2021 and be completed by December 2021.

Manufacturing work previously done in Tupelo will transition to facilities in San Marcos, Texas, and Monterrey, Mexico,

According to a company spokesperson, “The decision has not been taken lightly but is necessary with the ongoing transformation in the lighting industry. Signify will support its affected employees through the transition, and provide resources and training to assist them through this difficult period and set them up for future success.”

AUGUST 8, 2023 — 325 EMPLOYEES AS MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN PLANT CLOSES

Master Lock announced plans to close its Milwaukee, Wisconsin facility and lay off 325 employees, including management and machinists, commencing on November 3, 2023, through March 29, 2024. Operations will be transitioned to the company’s other facilities.

The three reasons for the closure were maximizing growth potential, maintaining competitiveness, and relying more on external suppliers.

A company spokesperson noted, “The plant closure was a business decision and not in any way a reflection on our employees in Milwaukee.”

Oak Creek, Wisconsin-based Master Lock Company, a manufacturer of padlocks, combination locks, safes, and related security products, has announced the permanent layoff of 61 employees as the company outsources its maintenance operations at the company's Milwaukee, Wisconsin facility. The permanent layoffs of the unionized employees are expected to begin on or about March 20, 2021.
